How I Accidentally Spent 8.45 Million Yen
Prologue: The Moment It Happened
November 27, 2025, 2:13 AM.
A Slack notification chimed.
"Your payment of $69,999.00 has been processed successfully."
...What?
I rubbed my eyes. Looked again. The number did not change. $69,999.00. About 8.45 million yen.
What did I just buy?
I opened my browser. The Dynadot dashboard. Two domains were gleaming back at me.
- news.online - $34,999
- news.xyz - $34,999
Total: $69,998. With fees, 8.45 million yen.
My finger slipped.
Well, to be precise, I was drunk. After BJJ practice, I had gone out drinking with friends. "Browsing premium domains is fun, right?" I remember clicking "Add to Cart," but I have no recollection of making it all the way to "Checkout."
Yet the charge was on my credit card statement.
I now owned 8.45 million yen worth of domains.
Chapter 1: Panic --> Resignation --> Owning It
2:30 AM - Panic Phase
"Can I return them?"
I scoured the Dynadot support pages. Premium Domain Sales are final sale. No returns. Attempt a chargeback and you risk account suspension plus potential legal action.
I searched Twitter for "Dynadot return" and "premium domain accidental purchase." Nobody else had made the same mistake. Everyone buys carefully.
Obviously. It is 8.45 million yen.
3:00 AM - Resignation Phase
I told my wife.
"...I spent 8.45 million yen on domains."
"What?"
"I bought two domains called news.online and news.xyz."
"...Can you return them?"
"No."
Silence.
"...So what are you going to do?"
"I don't know."
I answered honestly. I truly did not know.
4:00 AM - Owning It Phase
I took a shower and made coffee.
Thinking calmly:
- Fact: I paid 8.45 million yen
- Fact: I got two domains
- Fact: No returns
- Options: (1) Cry, (2) Sell, (3) Build
Crying would not get the money back. Selling would take time to find a buyer.
So the only option was to build something.
And I had to go all in.
Chapter 2: Thinking About the Value of a Domain Name
Once I calmed down, news.online and news.xyz were not bad at all.
The Potential of news.online
- online is a common English word
- Straightforward message: "news, online"
- Understood worldwide
- Easy to remember
The Potential of news.xyz
- xyz is a newer TLD (since 2014)
- Google's parent company Alphabet uses abc.xyz
- Popular with younger demographics
- Conveys a "next-generation news" feel
Both are 4 characters + extension. Short. Memorable. Easy to type.
...Could this actually be a win?
(No, stay calm. It is 8.45 million yen.)
Chapter 3: The Birth of the World's Shortest News Platform
Concept: News in 240 Characters or Less
X changed communication with 140 characters (later 280).
So why can't news be short too?
- 240 characters or less: Slightly longer than X, about the length of a LINE message
- Read one article in one minute: Perfect for commutes, breaks, bathroom visits
- Source links included: Full details in the original article
- AI summaries: Auto-generated with GPT-4o
- Multilingual: Simultaneous English and Japanese delivery
In other words, Instagram Stories for news.
Choosing the Tech Stack (4:30 AM - 7:00 AM)
Could not sleep, so I started building.
Frontend: Next.js 14 + TypeScript
Backend: Cloudflare Workers
Database: Supabase (PostgreSQL)
Auth: Supabase Auth
AI: OpenAI GPT-4o (summary generation)
Hosting: Cloudflare Pages
CDN: Cloudflare (naturally)
I chose Cloudflare for cost.
- Workers: 100,000 requests/day on the free tier
- Pages: Free
- CDN: Free
A man obsessing over free tiers right after spending 8.45 million yen.
First Article Posted (9:00 AM)
The first article was a self-introduction.
# I Accidentally Spent 8.45 Million Yen
At 2 AM, drunk, I bought news.online and news.xyz.
Total: $69,999. No returns. Going all in to build a news site.
The world's shortest news, 240 characters or less. Send help.
- Yuki Hamada / Founder, news.online
I posted it on Twitter.
--> 23,000 likes, 450 retweets, 1,200 comments
"The audacity!" "Rooting for you!" "8.45 million yen on domains is insane."
Fair enough.
Chapter 4: Growth Hacking - 12,000 Visitors in Month One
Strategy 1: Twitter Integration
Auto-fetch Twitter trends --> GPT-4o summarizes into 240 characters --> Publish
- API cost: About 3 yen per article
- 20 articles/day --> 1,800 yen/month
- Traffic from Twitter: 8,000 sessions/month
Strategy 2: LINE Bot Integration
Created an official LINE account for news.online.
- 7:00 AM: Top 3 news stories
- 12:00 PM: 3 lunchtime news stories
- 9:00 PM: Daily roundup of 5 stories
Subscribers: 320 in the first month
(Not many, but better than zero.)
Strategy 3: Reddit & Hacker News Posts
"I spent $70k on news.online and news.xyz while drunk. Here's what I built."
--> Made the Hacker News Top 5
--> 2,400 upvotes on Reddit r/entrepreneur
--> International traffic: 4,000 sessions/month
Total: 12,000 visitors in month one
Chapter 5: Monetization Trial and Error
Failure 1: Google AdSense
--> Rejected. "Insufficient content."
(Well, obviously -- each article is 240 characters.)
Failure 2: Affiliate Links
--> Nobody clicked them.
(People reading news are not there to buy products.)
Success 1: Sponsored Articles
Received corporate requests at 30,000 yen per article.
- 240 characters or less
- Clearly labeled "Sponsored"
- Distributed on Twitter and LINE simultaneously
5 articles/month --> 150,000 yen/month
Success 2: Paid Newsletter
Launched "Weekly Deep Dive" on news.xyz.
- Once a week, deep dives into 3 selected news stories
- 2,000 characters each (vs. the usual 240)
- 980 yen/month subscription
Subscribers: 18 in the first month
--> 17,640 yen/month
Total monthly revenue: Approximately 170,000 yen
Chapter 6: When Will the ROI Break Even?
Realistic Estimate
- Initial investment: 8.45 million yen
- Monthly revenue: 170,000 yen
- Payback period: 8.45 million / 170,000 = 49.7 months (about 4 years and 2 months)
...A long road.
But Here Is Why I Am Not Giving Up
- The domains themselves are assets: news.online could still sell for $40,000-50,000
- Growth rate: Monthly visitors are growing at +35% month-over-month
- Brand building: "news.online" is gaining recognition on social media
- Reusable tech stack: The same system can be expanded to other verticals (sports.xyz, tech.news, etc.)
Above all, building is fun.
Epilogue: What I Found on the Other Side of a Slip of the Finger
How do I feel now about the version of me who drunkenly spent 8.45 million yen that night?
No regrets.
To be precise, I "stopped regretting because it would not change anything" and just owned it.
But once I owned it, I started to see something interesting.
- The value of a domain name
- The potential of short-form news
- The mechanics of global content delivery
- The warmth of a community
Most of all, my own commitment was put to the test.
"I spent 8.45 million yen, so I have no choice but to go all in."
That pressure is what drove me.
What I Am Doing with news.online Right Now
